Named after the quintessential Ghanaian dish, TATALE or plantain pancake celebrates African flavours and cooking traditions from the Continent. Akwasi Brenya-Mensa, interdisciplinary artist, music manager, DJ, chef, and creative force behind TATALE, a restaurant that was at the Africa Center in London, takes us on a journey through food, art, and heritage. In the same spirit as a West African Chop Bar.

The old Chop Bars are a defining feature of the West African culinary landscape. These bustling roadside joints open their doors to all: well-heeled businessmen, tired trotro drivers, and young lovers alike. Patrons of any class, culture, and religion come together to share a cooling malt drink, or a restorative stew, which always ignites conversation.

CHOPBAR by Tatale brings that essence to life, through a more contemporary yet nostalgic lens.

AKWASI BRENYA-MENSA

Akwasi Brenya-Mensa is a Ghanaian- British interdisciplinary artist - a polymath with many strings to his bow. Having worked within food for over 10 years, Akwasi opened his award winning debut London restaurant and bar, Tatale, at The Africa Centre, in July 2022.

Akwasi made his debut into the food world via a street food pop- up which led him to high-profile festivals and contract catering pop-ups, and ultimately to the opening of his acclaimed, multi- functional arts space and restaurant in Sheffield.

Akwasi then turned his hand to music management and travelled the world extensively, visiting 30 countries in two years as an Artist Manager and DJ for a number of alternative artists (Flohio, Gaika, plus many more) making the most out of opportunities for cross- community collaboration and exchange with local producers and artists along the way. Outside of this work, Akwasi’s contributions to the scene reverberate far and wide, through ‘The Spectacular Empire’, infrastructure and platform for Black Art and Music via Warp Records, which he co-founded with Gaika in 2017.

Travel offered Akwasi a gateway to different cultures, cuisines, and cooking techniques, which became the catalyst to the creation of his supper-club series, ‘Mensa, Plates and Friends’ in 2019. The supper-clubs are an eclectic dive into and reiteration of dishes from the various places visited on his travels, and the supper clubs ask for compulsory donations from guests to be given to food banks connected with the fight against food poverty.

‘I grew up eating banquets on a Sunday, sitting around the table prepared by my mum and my aunts, I’ve also grown up around different influences and different inspirations, Tatale, is a reflection of that.’
— Akwasi
