Tatale is a contemporary food concept centred around telling stories through food, art and heritage. The menu is designed to celebrate and preserve the rich tapestry of African flavours and cooking traditions from the Continent. It comes at a time when African cuisines are beginning to be recognised in the way they deserve — as expansive and exciting.
In 2019, Akwasi visited his parents’ home in Kumasi, Ghana for the ‘Year of Return’, and one of the first things he ate was these pancakes made from plantains from the plantain tree in his family garden. Akwasi firmly believes that wherever you are in the world, plantain is synonymous with the Black Experience.
This idea of universality and heritage is central to the concept, and so Tatale was born.
AKWASI BRENYA-MENSA
Akwasi Brenya-Mensa is a Ghanaian- British interdisciplinary artist - a polymath with many strings to his bow. Having worked within food for over 10 years, Akwasi opened his award winning debut London restaurant and bar, Tatale, at The Africa Centre, in July 2022.
Akwasi made his debut into the food world via a street food pop- up which led him to high-profile festivals and contract catering pop-ups, and ultimately to the opening of his acclaimed, multi- functional arts space and restaurant in Sheffield.
Akwasi then turned his hand to music management and travelled the world extensively, visiting 30 countries in two years as an Artist Manager and DJ for a number of alternative artists (Flohio, Gaika, plus many more) making the most out of opportunities for cross- community collaboration and exchange with local producers and artists along the way. Outside of this work, Akwasi’s contributions to the scene reverberate far and wide, through ‘The Spectacular Empire’, infrastructure and platform for Black Art and Music via Warp Records, which he co-founded with Gaika in 2017.
Travel offered Akwasi a gateway to different cultures, cuisines, and cooking techniques, which became the catalyst to the creation of his supper-club series, ‘Mensa, Plates and Friends’ in 2019. The supper-clubs are an eclectic dive into and reiteration of dishes from the various places visited on his travels, and the supper clubs ask for compulsory donations from guests to be given to food banks connected with the fight against food poverty.
“‘I grew up eating banquets on a Sunday, sitting around the table prepared by my mum and my aunts, I’ve also grown up around different influences and different inspirations, Tatale, is a reflection of that.’”

CHOPBAR
The old Chop Bars are a defining feature of the West African culinary landscape. These bustling roadside joints open their doors to all: well-heeled businessmen, tired trotro drivers, and young lovers alike. Patrons of any class, culture, and religion come together to share a cooling malt drink, or a restorative stew.
PROVISIONS
Tatale Provisions is Nourishment (noun): of mind, body and spirit. An ode to the past, bringing awareness to the present and a celebration of the future. An introspective yet nostalgic experience that fosters the right food necessary for growth, health, and good condition.
Tatale Provisions is the latest installation by Ghanaian-British inter-disciplinary artist, Akwasi Brenya-Mensa. A living archive designed for every day sustenance that looks beyond the traditional retail experience.
Provision stores historically have been the centre for convergence amongst local communities. A brief moment that allows worlds and life experiences to collide over a familiar almost familial conversational exchange. Amidst the goods, from food staples to household items, they serve as important nodes in the social and economic fabric of a society. Today we live and breathe supermarket convenience. It is in this spirit that Brenya-Mensa’s iteration of the provisions store encourages the voyeur to reconsider the value and meaning of these goods.
An array of curated produce, product, and projects by artisans reflective of the Black experience* as your guide. Explore the theory of consumerism within Africa and in a global context. Question how culture is commodified and represented universally, and how traditional practices and trade are integrated into contemporary experiences.

Dining Under the Stars at AlKamar Camp
Under the stars and surrounded by the breathtaking landscapes of the Moroccan desert, Akwasi warmly presented his menu—a delicious fusion of traditional Ghanaian and Moroccan flavours inspired by ‘notes of water’ in a nod to WE, MAJI, Nataal’s digital issue and Special Project at 1-54 Marrakech exploring the power and symbolism of water. The menu offered an immersive culinary experience shaped by cultural exchange and creativity.
Guests arrived to sweeping views of distant mountains, the shimmer of the camp’s pool, and the raw beauty of the rocky desert slopes — all set to an atmospheric soundtrack by Moroccan-English DJ Yu Yu, who blended traditional Gnawa music with Sufi trance, house, funk and afrobeats.
The table was beautifully set with handcrafted pieces by French-Moroccan designer Zoubida, reflecting the local artistry and spirit of collaboration that defined the evening.

I’ve never been able to do food in such a collaborative spirit as I have here - it’s been a lot of fun even seeing how the kitchen works, but I think the beauty of working in this way is that anything can happen.
